NotebookLM | What You Need to Know

NotebookLM is an AI-powered tool from Google that helps you make sense of large amounts of information quickly. If you’ve ever wished for a research assistant who could actually read your documents and give you clear, accurate answers, this is it.

It is completely free and works right in your browser. You simply upload your own sources such as Google Docs, PDFs, websites or even YouTube videos. NotebookLM then gets to work summarising them and pulling out useful insights you can put to good use.

Prefer to watch instead? We also created a short 6 minute video that walks you through everything.

How it works (The sausage machine)

NotebookLM’s layout is pretty simple. You’ve got three sections: inputs, the process in the middle and then outputs on the right.

You start by adding sources. That could be your own files, shared Google Drive docs, or even text you paste in manually. The tool instantly pulls in summaries of each one and spots key themes without you even having to ask. Click into one and you’ll see the summary, the topics it’s picked up and where that info came from.

It’s like feeding the machine all your ingredients and having it hand you back helpful notes, summaries, and even content ideas in seconds.

What makes it different to Gemini or ChatGPT?

Unlike Gemini or ChatGPT, NotebookLM isn’t trying to be creative or make things up. It’s focused on accuracy. That means it’s a better fit when you want reliable outputs based on real information. No guesswork, no AI hallucinations.

Where other tools might say something inaccurate because it misread something online, NotebookLM stays grounded in what you’ve actually uploaded. If you’ve included a sustainability slide deck, it’ll reference that directly when you ask questions about environmental work.

And yes, it cites its sources, too. Just click the little reference number and you’ll see exactly where that fact came from.

Where NotebookLM can really help

When we first tested NotebookLM, it was clear it’s not just another AI tool for the sake of it. This one has real potential.

Imagine you’re building a campaign. You could upload a few documents, maybe last quarter’s strategy, some slides, and a case study. Then you ask it to build a content plan. Or maybe pull out FAQs for your website. Or even generate email copy based on a deck.

One of our favourite features? It creates podcast-style audio overviews based on your content. You can listen back to two AI voices chatting about what’s in your documents, almost like they’re reviewing it live. And yes, you can even join the conversation.

We’re not saying it’ll replace your team, but it might become your new favourite sidekick.

Why this matters for modern teams

We work with organisations that are stretched for time and juggling loads of information. NotebookLM helps cut through the noise.

You’re not digging through folders trying to find the right doc. You’re not second-guessing what someone meant in a slide. You’re just asking questions and getting straight answers from content you already trust.

For teams already using Google Workspace, NotebookLM fits in perfectly. You can share a notebook just like you would a Google Doc, making collaboration quick and familiar. If your sources are stored in Google Drive, it will always reference the most up-to-date version automatically. No need to re-upload or chase down the latest file. It just works.

Whether you work in marketing, legal, operations or any team that handles complex information, NotebookLM has the potential to transform the way you work.
